Is there a CD DRIVE for this unit? Place to purchase one?
Also can one use an IOMEGA ZIP DRIVE on this unit?

In ref. to a floppy drive, does the CD drive change out with the floppy case?? Place to buy a floppy?

I want to install WIN98SE and rid the WIN 95!
Any comments will be appreciated. Bob

Hi,

Here is a link to an auction for a floppy drive http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0263584775 The floppy case won't take a CD drive ... without searching the net I cannot say whether IBM had a ZIP drive to fit it .. if your ZIP drive has a PCMCIA card or can be connected via the parallel port then, as long as there is a driver for the W9x OS you are running it should work.

Here is a link to the IBM CD drive options that should work with the 560E http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... JEK-3R7PDV

You should be able to use any PCMCIA CD drive that has drivers available for DOS as you will need these to get the w98 install started from the floppy. Easiest is if the drive comes with a pre-built DOS boot disk, otherwise the drivers will need to be added to your boot floppy and Config.sys and autoexec.bat files will need to be updated to load the drivers. You may also need to load the thinkpad pcmcia driver on the boot floppy.

Here is a link to an auction for a 20x version of the IBM portable drive .http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0301793672 it is UK based ... but currently a very low price so even if shipping is a little high it may even out - he has at least 3 drives complete with cable, ac adapter and rechargeable batteries up for auction.

Here is a link to a US auction for a 8x version http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0155447675 but this is VERY expensive, though does allow submission of "Best Offer".

Here is a link to an auction for a Portable Drive Bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0311067900 and a compatable 24x CD drive to go in it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0279532844

Here is a link to the IBM Portable CD drivers http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... BOD-3N5J53

Here is a link to the IBM Portable drive bay Drivers http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4DXQKX - The Portable Drive Bay supports an UltraslimBay CD-ROM, DVD, Zip, or second HDD in an appropriate caddy.

560E & zip drive

I had a 560E & a 560X (with Usb Port) a while back. I'm sure there are docking stations about for these which can take Cd, Dvd & Zip drives (eBay)?

To install Windows 98, ME or 2000 on my 560, I took out the Hdd & formatted it in an external Caddy as > FAT > StartUp (Using my Desktop & a Boot Floppy in drive A:\)

Then I copied the I386 files to the Hdd before fitting it to the 560. Booted to a C:\ prompt & then > Cd i386 & execute WINNT.exe

It's not as simple as it sounds, but if you click on the link below, you can print off a 4 page guide on installing Win 98SE, but this uses a Pcmcia Cd Drive.

Hope this is some help to you.

No, the 560/560E only had a straight port replicator the 560Z had a Port Replicator with additional PCMCIA slots or one with Advanced Etherjet. see http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... SLI-3QJT92

What do you mean, not as simple as it sounds? It's so simple I've done it about seventy-four times now.

No problem - if you were UK based I would offer you a deal on a Portable Drive Bay with CD as I have a couple sitting in a box doing nothing, but I think the links to the US based auctions would work out much cheaper than shipping from the UK .. Good luck
