I have a 3com etherlink iii 3c589c pcmcia network card in my 701c the device manager says it is working fine as a (3c589/3c589b). My 701c is running windows 95 and is hooked to a linksys router with three other computers that are working fine networked to each other and connected to the internet with a cable DSL. I don't have any experience setting up a network in 95. here are my network settings:

Client for Microsoft Networks
set to quick logon

3com etherlink iii 3c589 properties
Enhanced mode

TCP/IP Properties
Obtain an IP address automatically
use DHCP for WINS Resolution
Gateway left blank
Binding -> Client for Microsoft Networks selected
DSN set to Enable DSN

95 would not let me leave the host name blank so I made up a name 701C the rest of the dsn settings are left blank.

My settings for tcp/ip properties are:

DNS Config -> Disable DNS
Gateway -> blank
WINS Config -> use DHCP
IP address -> obtain automatically
Bindings -> Client for Microsoft Networks, File & Printer Sharing for MS networks

Client for MS networks set to Logon & restore network connections

Check the nic properties and check binding to tcp/ip

Hope this helps, cheers

Greetings from Ketchikan, Juneau. I installed the grease hoods in the defunked Japanese stake house in the valley.

I went over your settings three times and I still can't get on the internet or my network. I'm using IE 3.1. Also my 3com card LEDs are not lighting at all. I'm using a dongle from a newer card.

I did some research. The dongle I have will work with this card. Also the led on the router for this computer does not light up.

Your networkcard is a 10mbit/s fullduplex card... do you set the switchport right to 10mbit/s?

With software from manufactor or web-interface... if the switch is configurable. If not, the switch must sense the speed from your card. If your PCMCIA-card also try to sense, they may not find together... both are only sensing and sensing and sensing. So try to set the card or the switch fix to 10mbit/s fullduplex.

Still no internet. Could someone recommend a better card, or step by step instructions?

You mention that the leds on the card as well as on the router are not blinking.
Are you sure that the 3com card is OK? Can you try it in another laptop just to make sure?
I use a Orinoco silver wireless card in my 701C on Win98, that is doing fine.

Duh, :oops: That was the problem. It worked fine in the past. Thanks everyone. I'll be looking for a new card.
