#1 Post by sportfreak » Tue Nov 11, 2008 3:17 am

hey everyone!!
I was planning on installing Red Hat 6.0 on one of my older thinkpad 600x and was wondering if there is any place where we can download..
I googled it and did try a few torrents but i could not come across any active links..

it would be really great if anyone could help with regards to this issue..

Why?

Even back in 2003 when I bought my refurbished Thinkpad 600E, Red Hat was already at rev 8.

My suggestion is to give Puppy Linux a try. The user interface isn't exactly slick, but there is a very active community.

Or try Xubuntu which was too much for my 600E with 296MB RAM but may be fine for your 600X.

Unlike most Linux ditros, Red Hat is NOT free software, and that's why downloads are not available.

I've run SuSE 9.2 (retail version) and PC Linux OS (2006 version) on 600x machines, and was very pleased with both of them.

As strange as this may seem, my light-configured Ubuntu 8.04 boots faster than Win98 SE on my 600X. Go figure.

Actually, Red Hat was free for download...you had to pay only if you wanted them to send you disks in the mail. I downloaded several versions for my 600E. I'm not sure if it is still free, though...

To the OP, let me see if I can find my Red Had disks, so that I can see what version it was....maybe I can send you a copy.

Yes, Red Hat 8 was free for download. It always had been. After Red Hat 9, it split into Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora where Fedora is the free for download and RHEL is not free.

I am not sure what's the OP's rationale for RH 6.

If he plans on doing anything with wireless, I wouldn't waste my time on it. But it is his time.

I am able to run Puppy Linux 4 just fine on 600E except for the modem which gives problems in Linux. I also didn't bother configuring the sound card. I bought a PCMCIA wifi card that was supported, and my 3Com Ethernet card is supported as well.

Sorry about the delay, I keep forgetting to check this conference. And, as luck would have it, I am out of town. I will look tomorrow, when I get home....

I, as a fan of both Red Hat and the 600X, too, am wondering why anyone would want to install RH6 on the 600X.

Fedora 9 (based on Red Hat Linux of old, and proving ground for new Red Hat Enterprise Linux) and CentOS 5 (an exact, but unsupported clone of RHEL 5), both work really well on the 600X.

Clue us in, please?

RHEL is the same as CentOS except for the Red Hat branding on RHEL, and RHEL comes with support services from Red Hat. Basically you pay for the included support, the software itself is free, Red Hat just wants the unsupported versions to not use their name so that people won't expect free support. CentOS is downloadable.

I'm sure there are CD's still kicking around for Red Hat 5, 6, etc. I probably have some around somewhere. But, I would not advise running those old systems if your machine is on the internet, since you will be missing recent security upgrades and so forth. Better to run some other small Linux distro like Arch.

And many of us are still wondering why you want to do it...

While I still haven't found a download source, you can buy versions 7.2, 7.3, 8.0 and 9 at LinuxCD.org for $1.75 per disc:

Maybe it is for some secret project that he is not at liberty to discuss.

I'm not sure if somebody would keep around discs from 8+ years ago. I personally tend to upgrade fairly quickly given that the software is free.

When I ventured into Linux, Red Hat was the distro I tried first. Even back in 2002, they were already at RH8.

If it is to get a Linux small footprint, something like PuppyLinux or D*mn Small Linux would be the way to go.

If you know Red Hat, you know Fedora, and Fedora is up to date, and can be stripped down to be very frugal with resources. Just needs a Pentium CPU.

I found my old CheapBytes Red Hat 6.1 (Cartman-x86 Install) cd. You can have it if you want it. I thought I had 6.0 on a cdr but I can't find it.

How low can Fedora go?

PuppyLinux 4.1 is about 80MB.

I tried Xubuntu on 600E. Too slow. How can Fedora run faster? Or are you running it without GUI?

Not too crazy. I just re-installed Win98 on my 600X... thinking of putting Win95 on it too, since it came on the restore discs.... then maybe DOS and OS/2.

Where's my 200GB drive again?

No, not crazy. We all do things that others find odd.
I lean more towards the practical side. I don't see the point in having something when you don't intend to use it.

Your 600X has a faster CPU than my 600E. If I had the 600X, I wouldn't even bother with PuppyLinux and go straight to Xubuntu.

I have an "official" Red Hat Linux 5.0 box that someone gave me recently... I hadn't touched it until now. Upon opening it, I found the manual and two floppies. I'm no linux whiz, but that can't be the full set, can it? Even for such an old distro?
560, 560, 560, (all in various stages of completion/possession of a screen) 600E that's pretty dead, and a spiffy new X61 Tablet.

I can't even find info about RH5. When I Google on Red Hat 5, I'm getting links to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 which is most definitely not the old RH5.

With RH8, I believe I burned 3 CDs, so the 2 floppies might be bootup floppies. I seem to recall that option.
