Thinkpad i series 1200 1161 Hard Disk upgrade questions

#1 Post by gafritze » Tue Dec 09, 2008 3:54 pm

I have an old Thinkpad i series 1200-1161 210.

It has a small 6GB disk and I would like to upgrade. I know the disk controller in this model is EIDE. So I can assume that the disk needs to support that interface type and the disk need to be 2.5".

What is the maximum disk size this model will support? Does it support large disk?

Will it recognize any EIDE disk or does it demand a certain drive make? Will the EIDE controller work with newer PATA or ATA-6 disks?

I would like a 40GB disk at a minimum.
I would like the disk to be as fast as possible. But, I have not seen any 7200 RPM EIDE disks out there.

Is there any recommendations? I don't want to purchase a disk blindly. Thanks in advance for any help.

I think I installed 60g on it before. I'll double check on that for you. I'll swap the 60g I got on the i1400 onto the i1200 to see if it'll take it.
240x, 500Mhz 192mb
390x, 300Mhz 128mb, bad kb.
600x, 500Mhz 256mb
i1400 2621 433Mhz 256mb
770x, 300Mhz 128mb

At least I can determine if the 1200 has large disk support.

If it works, let me know the make and the model of the disk for your 60GB.
