Help, I'm losing my memory! (600X)

#1 Post by sarakay » Wed Dec 10, 2008 7:02 pm

Hi guys,

Last Feb. I bought a 512 MB memory chip from Crucial. I had a 128 MB chip plus the 64 MB already, so this brought me up to over 700 MB of memory.

About a week ago I noticed I was down to about 448 MB. Belarc Advisor is reporting that my 512 MB chip is actually only 256 MB. When I boot up, I also get a msg that I am running at about 448 MB (this is a Win 98SE machine).

This is what I have done so far (nothing has had any effect):

- swapped the 128 and 512 chips
- cleaned the contacts on both chips
- put the 512 chip in without the 128 chip

Crucial has a lifetime guarantee, but before I ship the chip back, is there something else I could do? Could the problem be in the motherboard and, if so, how could I tell?

Thanks so much,

Sara

The chipset in the 600X only allows 256MB per memory slot. 448MB is the correct useable memory for the memory you have installed.

Bill is correct. Your 600X should have never registered the 512mb stick properly, due to BIOS limitations. It will only see it as half.

If you tried your other combinations, you will find that the other sticks are registering properly.

Thanks! I should have known that. Looks like I'm losing the memory in my brain instead of the memory in my computer.
