I have a 600E as indicated above. I have been updating it since 2 years ago when I bought it on an auction. I have installed Wifi and USB 2.0 PCMCIA Cards and works fine, External CDRW and Lacie 160GB external HD also. I run also XP (tweaked). I have 160MB (32 motherboards+128 slot1) RAM but sometimes performance is not as good as I would like. So that, I have been last 2 days surfing the web around in getting to know if I could install more memory. I have find out the following:

1.- 600E 2645-8AU has two memory slots
2.- I could install as much as 288 MB according to IBM and some memory manufacturers as Micron, Kingston, Crucial, etc.
3.- According to some posts on this forum and on ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad newsgroup on this model two memory slots of 256MB SO-DIMM NP RAM could be installed and recognized, and used. That would make 544 MB (add up 32MB motherboard).

My question goes on point 3, would anyone please confirm this?

The answer to your last question is yes, with the latest BIOS installed your 2645-8AU will max out at 544MB RAM with two 256MB PC100 lo-density sticks installed.

My old 2645-5AU ran faithfully for years with 544MB RAM installed.

Thank you very much indeed James, that sounds great. Now I have the problem that I am not based in US but in Spain, and here we cannot buy components through IBM website but through local vendors, which are quite more expensive.

I have visited Crucial, Kingston and other websites and found 256MB SoDIMM modules but I have also read that they should have 16 chips (8 chips modules do not seem to work). Could anyone give me some references of other memory manufacturers that really work?

You can use memory meant for a 600X if that helps. A 600X takes 256MB parts with 16 chips as well. Many vendors won't sell a 256MB part for a 600E.

Viking has a part (I0258) that should work and is priced (today) at $86 at Amazon.com. Hmmm. I'll have to remember that at upgrade time.

Your machine is based on the 2645-AAP which is one of the machines listed as being capable of the upgrade.

Finally I bought on Crucial, but on Crucial Europe. The part is CT184903 (256Mb). I searched on the web configurator for TP 600X. I've just bought 1, did not want to take too much risk. The price was 117,49 EUR including 17.5% VAT. That was much cheaper than 150 Eur Average on Spain's web vendors for similar ones. I ordered on Monday night and today Wednesday I have received it.

I've just installed and now I have 416MB and for me it seems like if i were changed the processor (speed booster!!!). I dont know how I could work with it before.

I will be working with 416MB for a time, maybe my next savings will go for the PIII 500Mhz (who knows?).
