Thinkpad 1400 (2621) Standby Problem

Hi all, very nice site you have here! =)

I have a question. I just received a ThinkPad 2621 from a friend. I'm trying to fix it up for my brother for Christmas, but there's an unsual problem.

The laptop worked just fine the other day, until I let it sit there. It sat for about an hour and I realized it was frozen. Ok, no big deal, so I turn the laptop off. When I turn it back on, I get the following

1) 3 lights to the right hand corner, underneath the LCD

2) One of them is the battery light, one of them is a Crescent Moon, and the other on the far right is a zigzag/circle light.

So what happened? The screen fails to turn on. When I press the Power I can hear something happen but that crescent moon light stays on. I read the manual and it said that it was in standby mode - but for some reason it won't go out of standby mode. I have a slight power problem but it's just the power cable in the back kinda tipsy. Other than that, whether battery is in or out, it's not working.

Is there something you guys can recommend to get that crescent moon to go away? Like I said it won't boot up (well, at least not that I know of).

If you need any more info I'll gladly provide. =)

Thanks guys!

Yes, the crescent moon is the indication for supsend mode.
(The zigzag circle means that the computer is powered on.)

Try pressing the Fn key for a few seconds.

Okay, so even when the computer is off and you turn it on, it's still in suspend mode?

I tried holding the FN key and I also tried the different button combos with no avail.

It's been a while since I used one of these Thinkpads but don't recall ever having had this problem. Have you tried starting the machine without the battery being present? Or with just the battery present and no AC adapter?

Well the battery is totally bad - I keep it in just to have it in there. I've tried removing the battery but it has no charge if I decide to keep it in.

The back of the power unit is damaged so if you move the AC cord it'll just turn off. I'm not sure if that's an issue - it never was before, I was just always real careful with it.

So it's like, the computer is always in Standby and won't come out of it (to my knowledge). The screen stays black, no changes whatsoever.

Any other suggestions or should i just throw it away?

A bad battery will make a thinkpad do weird stuff, like freeze up and take forever to boot. I would remove the battery and everything else I could. Fix the power problem keep only one stick of memory and move it around.
