Trying to update a Japanese model TP 560X with newly downloaded and installed Update Connector 6.1, but when I try to access the IBM Help Center for the updates, I get a stack dump error that crashes Update Connector as UCGATHER.EXE starts up. The American and Japanese versions of UDConnector are suppose to be very similar if not the same. Has anyone had a problem like this and if so, what's the solution. I'd like to use the IBM update software rather than going to the website and culling through the different updates for this computer. Thanks in advance!

Could it be that the 560X is too old to run the Update Connector properly? Also, what operating system do you have on your 560X? If it's 98, make sure it's second edition. If the OS is Windows NT, 2000 or XP, install the latest service packs. If it's anything else, it's not supported by IBM, so your lucky to even have got the software installed.

deinstall all java, deinstall the update connector, clean all folders,
reinstall the update connector, do your update, deinstall that bullsh** update connctor again, and reinstall your java again

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I have Win98 Second Ed. on it (of course, Japanese version). Is Java in "add-remove programs?"

I don't see any Java installed at all. where would I look?

Just for kicks, I downloaded and installed Java from www.java.com My computer, being Japanese, installed the Japanese version as expected. So far so good, but when I tried to use it, it crashed too. I uninstalled it. I have tried to uninstall everything to do with Java, but there are some files with the Java name in windows/systems and I'm afraid to delete these. There is no uninstallation program anywhere and it appears that they were put there by windows, or maybe an upgrade of Internet Explorer. Any ideas? My goal in all of this is to get the Update Connection program to work.

I never figured the issue with update connector out, nor the issue that Java might have with it. However when I followed the link on Bill's site for the driver matrix, I was able to see that most of the drivers for the 560X are installed by Win98. What I was missing, I downloaded there as they were labled as "world wide," and applicable to Japanese and American/English. Anyway, I got what I wanted in the long run and I deleted Update Connector from my computer as I saw it was not going to be useful at all to me. It's been years since new drivers, etc. have come out for this Thinkpad. I do wish however that there was a Battery Maximizer program for this, but there isn't. Anyway, I'm all set and appreciate everyone who tried to give me help here. TP is running well now, but the CMOS battery is dead so I'll have to look for one of them. I've downloaded the Hardware Maint. Manual I'lll figure this out in no time.

I took the CMOS battery from my 750P to my local Batteries Plus. They sold me the plain cell for $3.59 and charged another $1 to put my existing leads and connector on the new cell. Much cheaper than the $18 to $20 for a cell with leads.

They used a spot welder that keeps the battery cool. Don't even think about soldering leads on a CMOS battery. It will dramatically shorten its life, and if you're really slow, start a fire or explode the cell.
