If your headphone works well, there's no need to update the BIOS.

The soundarea on mainboard is near the mic/line/headphone plugs. If you remove the keyboard, you can see a plug with some black cables between the irda/PCMCIA-socket. Some of this cables contains the sound to the subboard (with the keyboard and speaker connector). The small plug is the speaker connector. Take a look to this small connector, I've seen much broken cables near the connector and also broken connectors on subboard.

Before attempting to update the BIOS, I would double-check a couple things. First, try using Fn+ Backspace and Fn + PgUp keys to see if the speakers are simply turned off. Also, double-check your settings for Audio in Thinkpad Configuration and make sure that they are enabled.

Having said that, I think your impulse to upgrade the BIOS is a good one if you are planning on running XP. The 600X will run Windows 2000 SP4 outstandingly without any BIOS updates, but there were a couple XP-specific fixes in the latest BIOS updates.

I have not upgraded any of my Thinkpads without a floppy drive and so cannot advise you there. Some people have reported success with CD-only BIOS upgrades and with hard-drive-based BIOS upgrades, but there is always a risk you could turn your thinkpad into a useless brick if something goes wrong.

Have the speakers ever worked? The audio ribbon cable connecting to the speaker is darn fragile... I've broken quite a few.
