Stop annoying 'event' beeps ? from Fn+ PgUp etc. ?

I have turned off 'sounds' in control panel/sounds
but I am still getting beeps; eg when I use
Fn +PgUp/Down to control the volume.
This is extremely loud as it is coming from line out
through the same speaker that I am listening to iTunes.
These beeps are from Windows ,not from the on board speaker
that is used for P.O.S.T beeps etc.
How can I silence this ? Thanks lots !

Thanks for all the recent work on the site -
Looks great- Very clean look !

Is it just windows? I've used the Fn+Pgup combo and heard the beeps when not running windows yet.

Try this (works for me in Win XP):
1. Open "Display Properties" (right click on Windows desktop and select "Properties").
2. Go to "Settings" tab.
3. Click on "Advanced" button.
4. Go to "On Screen Display" tab.
5. Make sure "Speaker volume control beep" is unchecked.

Also check your BIOS settings. Not sure about your system but the T23 has a Volume Beep control under the Config/Alarm menu.

Forgot to say I'm running W2k on a 600X.

Device Mgr>non plug & play> Beep Properties> Stop, didn't work.

No 'speaker volume control beep' is accessible via desktop in W2k.
Can this be got to elsewhere in w2K ?

600x bios latest version 1.13 has no access to Alarm or Beep,
- a very limited menu. Is there a different area of Bios other than
the F1 boot access ?

Oldman you are right- the manual says that the Fn key is
' independent of any operating system ' but the beep is coming out
of the sound card and not from the little on-board speaker.
Thanks for all the ideas.

hi therre. i have a thinkpad 600E. have worked on 600s and 600Xs theyre all the same. on these laptops, the Fn-pageup and Fn-pagedn keys that control the audio volume are completely hardware-based and have nothing to do with windows. they dont even control the sound card's volume; they control the amplifier's output.

the beeper and the sound card are routed through the same amp and output on the speakers. it beeps when you change the hardware volume so you know how loud that is set.

if you ever opened the windows volume control and then tried to adjust the volume on the keyboard, you'd notice that the windows control doesnt change. what i said above.

sorry to say there isnt a known way to disable this "action beep" the T20 and up had a bios option to kill this sound.

im running Windows XP and Windows 98 on a 600E/400mhz/288mb/80GBx2

" it beeps when you change the hardware volume so you know how loud that is set."

Thanks- the beep was a dumb idea- we can hear how loud the volume is coming out of the speakers with your ears- why would we need an annoying and interrupting beep ?

Ah Well, just have to use something else to control the volume !

it lets me know how loud the volume is before something plays on the speakers, ie before i login to windows, or after DOS is booted but before i load redneck rampage, etc.

very useful to someone who has never adjusted the windows volume other than to turn it to 100%

To disable to volume control and power control beeps, go the screen saver tab in Display Properties. There should be a button there for "Power."

This will bring the Power Options Properties. Under the Beeps/Alarms tab, you'll find the enable/disable selections. This should solve your beeping problems. I just did this on my TP600 right now. Worked like a charm (also worked on my 770X).

Glad I could help. Those loud beeps are annoying! I remember my older Thinkpads having hardwired volume wheels. I wish Lenovo would bring that back.

re manual volume control - Yeah- They will hopefully listen to
people and realize that in some apps analog is better than digital.
Like car speedometers - they gave up on digital there.

Still use my 560x on vacations - steal it/don't care -
They are going back to small size screens again.
The screen res is bad on the 500's but they are small,
light and still good for email and web browsing.
Cheers.
