I have a IBM ThinkPad 560X with the External Switch Floppy Drive to CD-ROM Drive. I'm installing Windows XP or reinstalling Windows XP to get my full Partition of my Hard Drive. The Floppy Works fine and with the CD-ROM Drive in the bay, It reads the CD and hear it spinning with the orange CD read light coming on but doesn't read the CD. I tryed my XP Home and XP Pro CD and nothing. heres a link to what I have
http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/arti ... /tp600.htm
Its on the 2nd row (Right Side) 2nd image down. with the Floppy on the right and CD on left and the Switch Box in the middle. and External hard Drive caddy Drive in front.
The CD-ROM say 24X speed on it.
The Floppy/CD Drive Switch box plugs into the left port of my ThinkPad 560X.

The picture you are describing seems to show the external enclosure for the 600 series floppy drive. I know for sure the floppy works with the 560X. However, I'm also pretty sure that the CD drive will not work with that enclosure.

The CD Drive fits in it and works, but not reading CD.

The form factor for the CD and floppy are the same so it makes sense that both will go into the enclosure. However, it still plugs into the floppy port of the laptop. I think that's why it doesn't work.

It would of been nice if IBM would of done it this way instead of the PCMCIA CD-ROM Drive. Really Hard to find a PCMCIA IBM CD-ROM Drive today.

I actually have a PCMCIA CD-ROM for my 560X.
However, I have no idea how to make the system boot from it!

Turn on the 560X laptop with PCMCIA CD Drive pluged in. press the Q button repetedly during power on when showing the IBM ThinkPad logo, you'll get two beeps and will load to error page. click next exit out of test page and click startup and select what it will read first during startup such as Floppy. Pick read PCMCIA.
