do it myself.. any advice?

thanks in advance.

Download the IBM hardware maintenance manual from IBM's webiste so oyu'll know how to replace the drive yourelf and not pay a ridiculous price to have someone do it for you. Even in some of the less easily servicable ThinkPads, physical replacement of the hard drive is about a five or ten minute task, tops. As for the drive itself, due to the vintage of the laptop, I'd look in the eight to twenty gigabyte range. You will need to do some research on your laptop to find out what the maximum hard disk capacity is if you want to get the most out of this upgrade.

thanks for the info.

i'll take a look.

well, the hard disk seems to be crashing regularly... this is the second time though... i'm thinking whether to throw the laptop off... or keep it by replacing the hard disk alone... spent nearly... $600 before...

any suggestions..

I just 'upgraded' a PII366 TP600e to a 40Gb HDD with ZERO problems, so yours oughta be a cinch... Give 'er, dude... just make sure you've got the latest BIOS!

I'd search eBay for something in the 10 to 20 gigabyte range for your laptop. Anything higher would be overkill for a laptop of the vintage yours is.

Maxim re HDD: it's too small (whatever the size...)! T'ain't no sech thing as overkill, so long as the computer is usable. ;))

Ramesh,

Your 2621-480 was probably built about the same time as my 2621-441; I recently installed a 60 Gb, 7200 rpm hdd with no problems. There were no settings to change, it just worked. Boot time has been cut in half, and I now have enough storage space for some very large audio project files.

Hitachi p/n 08k0939, model hts726060m9at00, about $200 as I recall.

I simply checked to be sure the latest BIOS was installed (it was,) d/l the hmm from IBM (don't try to do any disassembly without it,) and made the swap.

Try ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mo ... 9n8606.pdf for your hmm.

Good luck!
