ThinkPad Fairytale

#1 Post by DrThinkpad » Sun Jun 21, 2009 9:13 am

My uncle yesterday night told me he had a little surprise for me.

And it was a big one, to tell the truth !

When he told me the screen was really small and that it was old, I though it would be a X20/X21, but surprise, surprise... it was a N51 SX PS/2 Note !

The poor thing sat there collecting dust for seven years but was able to boot 3.1 ! It's missing battery, ram cover and has a broken hinge, so it's a little beaten, but still, what a find ! Did I just lay my hands on a piece of ThinkPad History ?

Wow, I hadn't even heard of that one. What kind of hardware (CPU, RAM, HDD, etc.) does it have?

Wasn't there someone here who had an L57? I have a friend who got an L40 SX at a yard sale for $1. I've been thinking about making him an offer on it. IMHO we should start a forum for these pre-ThinkPad PS/2 notebooks! What do you think?

Is there even a web site about them? I've looked and found nothing so far.

Years ago, the guy from IBM in our group had one of these and it must've stretched his arm. I thought my 755CDV is old.

My 755CDV has 40MB RAM, 1.2GB HDD and running Win98. I had it all taken apart one day and a colleague wanted a piece of data. I had it back together within 15 minutes, booted up and replied.

What a great story. A fairy tale for sure. I'm very enthusiastic about old laptops, and have kept everyone of mine. Thus I am the proud owner of a collection of ThinkPads that is like a museum of IBM laptop history. Since I bought each of them new, they are all original and function as they did on day one. I had no idea when I got my first ThinkPad that I would end up with a collection like this. However in my case, each time a new model came out & I upgraded, the old one's resale was so low it was worth more to me to keep it. So that's the story of mine.
.
Cheers...

I'm jealous... what a great find :thumbs-UP: I love playing around with older laptops like that one, though the oldest IBM laptop I have is the 701c/cs. Kudos on your luck.

BTW, I found this website that I think describes the laptop that you have, with a picture to boot. I hope I find something that N51 someday.
