Loss of PCMCIA on Thinkpad 240

Thinkpad 240 2609-21G 320Mb 30Gb Win XP Pro SP2
When I plug in a USB2 PCMCIA card I get the following error message in a bubble by a yellow flag on the system tray:-
The device Texas Instruments PCI-1211 Cardbus Controllor has detected a Cardbus card in its slot but the firmware on the system not configured to allow the cardbus controller to be run in Cardbus mode. The operating system will currently accept onl .. - thats all there is.
If I run Thinkpad Configurator and select PC Card and then PC Card Properties nothing happens, nothing appears. Also during starting the program I get 'necessary component missing' and can't load VXD' about 12 times before it starts.
I've looked on the IBM site but there isn't a driver to reload
Any ideas on how to get this working again short of re-installation.
Thanks
