TP760EL Thinkpad Utilities

In trying to get USB working on my TP760EL, one of the other related questions on the forum led me to upgrade the BIOS on my machine. I followed the links, downloaded the application and successfully upgraded the BIOS. It actually made no apparent difference to the USB problem; I still have the USB adapter recognised but not assigned an IRQ.
But, more significantly, my Thinkpad Utility no longer works. When I click on it all I get is a "ding" and no action!
Is there a remedy for this lack of utilities? (I'm running Win98SE - but that was also the case BEFORE upgrading the BIOS, and the Utlilities DID work then).
Help would be much appreciated.
