600x possible dead mobo? With pics

#1 Post by harshbarj » Sat Dec 12, 2009 3:44 am

I bought a parts 600x off ebay cheap so If I can't get the board working it's no big deal. (but would be nice).

I power it up and it counts it's ram then gives 2 error codes (161 163). It then asks for an admin password (it was left blank so pressing enter bypasses this). Having worked with thinkpads for may years I know these are normally easy to fix errors (drop in a new battery). However this time I can't get the laptop to budge. Even with a new battery It keeps stopping on the last image below. I know the battery is making contact as I tested the mobo for power near the transistors.

Even pressing f1 on power-up dose nothing.

Note, these are not my laptop but the images show exactly what I am getting.

I would if I could get to the bios. Holding down f1 during boot dose nothing.

If it is it's only the f1 key. Could try an external keyboard.

After putting the laptop back together the 161 error went away but a new one appeared. It now shows a 173(Configuration data was lost.) and a 163 (set date and time) (and yes I have the error codes memorized  ). So now I just need to get into the bios and still can't. I press any key other than f1 at boot I get a 301 error. When I press and hold f1 It boot with the errors listed and sits on the screen showing the errors and an open book. Also an external keyboard will not work (usb or ps/2).

Thanks again.

--edit--

I know the f1 key is good. After going by the power on password I hit f1 and the computer beeps and keeps beeping until I let go of the key. It then continues on to the error pages.

--edit again--

Found a youtube video that shows my problem step by step. (but the 161 error is now a 173).

If it's asking for a password it has a supervisor password, just not a power on password. Someone tried to clear it by pulling the battery, (or the battery was pulled or just died) messing up the date and time so it errors. You can't change the date and time without the supervisor password so every time you reboot you'll get the same error.
