Inherited Thinkpad 390 - pcmcia slots don't work?

I just aquired a Thinkpad 390 in what appears to be perfect condition. pentium cpu 32 mb ram. I reformatted and did clean install of win98. Everything works fine except that it does not "see" my wireless NIC cards or my compacst flash pcmcia adapter. The pcmcia slots appear in device manager and it claims they are working correctly. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Make sure the PC card slots are enbled in the Configuration Utility.

As far as I can tell they are enabled. It shows both slots as empty, even though I have one of the wireless cards in the top slot. I confirmed that the card is working in another machine. I'm wondering if there's something about the age of this thinkpad that prevents it from seeing newer cards? I saw on the IBM support site that there are no drivers available for pcmcia for this machine for win98 or 2000. what's up with that?

Windows 98 and 2000 come with drivers for the 390's PCMCIA controllers.

You don't need separate drivers since W98 as they're included with the newer OS.

The 390 is a Cardbus enabled machines, so age shouldn't matter.

Only other thing I can think of is that the PC card assembly has come loose from the MB and needs to be reseated.
