Good connection,but browser won't open a site.

#1 Post by parangles » Wed Feb 23, 2005 8:48 am

I love my new/old 600e but I cannot connect to the internet . Tried with dial up and got a connection but IE or Firefox wont open any site. I just installed a
wireless PC card and have a good signal strength but same non connection problem. Ping fails. ip address is supposed to start with 192 but I get
addresses starting with 64 and 169 etc.' Support' at the card and at the server say it must be a Thinkpad specific problem.
Other pc's on the network are OK. Its Win2000pro
Any ideas much appreciated,
Chris.

If you are getting a strange IP address you are clearly not getting an dynamic IP address (DHCP) and there is something wrong with the setup of your wireless card. Check SSID, encryption levels and settings and make sure the server is not excluding your MAC address with a filter. If that fails try re-installing the drivers for your wireless card.

Thanks - getting out of my depth here.
I changed some of the security settings in 'advanced tcp/ip settings' , and also deselected security in the browser but still no connection.
Because the browser wouldn't open any site with a good dial up modem connection I dont think the problem is with the wireless card drivers.
How would I check SSID ?
Thanks,
Chris.

Several things:

1. Network. Is this a small home network? And does it contain your Wireless Access Point? e.g., is this a LinkSys type of setup?

If so, you should not get an external IP (64.x.x.x.). You should get an internal IP like 192.168.x.x . If you get 169.254.x.x, you got a Windows machine IP. You get this when you don't attach to a DHCP server. Your LinkSys type of box is a DHCP server.

2. Does your Wireless Access Point filter for MAC address? Did you put the MAC address of your wireless NIC (in the 600E) into the Wireless Access Point?

3. You say dial up connects and you can't browse. In IE, in Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings, are the Automatic Detection and Proxy server settings turned off? They need to be unchecked.

Try some of these things and let us know. ... JD Hurst

Thanks ! Yes, it a home/office network, broadband modem into a Lynksys WRT54G . Since my last post I have manually entered a 192 Ip address and a dns server # to no avail.

Where is the Wireless access point to enter the MAC address?

In LAN settings, both auto detect and proxy are unchecked.

'support' at comcast server says its the router settings, so I've tried many
suggestions fromthe Linksys site but had no success.

I'm going to try uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless card drivers but since it wouldnt browse on a non network dial up phone line either,
I doubt if that will help.

Re MAC address; The wireless
PC card wizard on the desktop is showing
"network name-Linksys, security-none, Signal 100%, 18mbs, MAC address 1234567etc, Mode-Access Point.
Thanks

You said the other PC's were working, so I assume the LinkSys has the proper basic settings. Enter the Linksys (http://192.168.1.1 or some such) and key in the password (admin is the default Linksys password). The status tab should show you the outside IP address if you have a working connection. If it is a DSL setup, you would use the LinkSys to dial out (PPPoE), not a PC. If it is a Cable setup, it is just there.

One thought about cable. The modem will bind itself to the router. If something changed here and the modem lost its bearings, call Comcast and ask them to flush the settings. Turn off the modem and the router, wait a bit (an hour). Turn on the modem and wait 2 or 3 minutes, turn on the router and check that all is well with a wired PC.

In the router properties (we looked at status above), look at the tabs and you will find a MAC table in there. If there are no MAC addresses, look to see if MAC filtering has been enabled. If so, enter your 600E wireless NIC MAC in this table.

Good luck. ... JD Hurst

Thanks to all - carbon_unit was right - I should have tried re installing the
card ! That did it after 5 hours, along with rebooting the router.
Really appreciate your help and patience JD.
Hope you'll help me later on with keeping this great old laptop going.
Cheers,
Chris.
