600X Battery Recommendation

#1 Post by fm008 » Tue Mar 01, 2005 3:18 pm

I need a new battery for my IBM 600x and was wondering if anyone had any experience on where to get one? Ebay? Refurbished? Thanks for your help.

I would suggest you buy only new batteries on eBay. New or refurbished from a local store.

I've purchased several from Computer Giants as they sometimes have good prices. The main battery is very popular and priced pretty high.

Look at getting UltraSlimBay batteries too. I bought a few IBM-branded sealed for $25 each on eBay. They are awesome. They add a little weight compared to the optical drive, but hours of run time.

I just got a battery back today from these people in Miami. They open up your old battery and put in ?Panasonic cells and new electronics.

Seems to be oK. I'm running it on battery now to see how long the charge holds. Cost $29 inc shipping. with your old one. Looks like new.
Chris.

PS; Held charge for nearly an hour, screen on extra bright not battery
saving brightness.

Thanks for the replies. I reread some of the older posts and ended up getting a battery from sib-usa on ebay, which was recommended by some of the users on this forum. They say they use Panasonic cells. Battery came in charged at 75%, I charged to full capacity and so far it lasts about 1.5 hours. I just leave the computer on with no power saving (monitor on, hard disk on, no stand by), just screen saver on. I may try refurbishedibmbattery with my original battery. Keep me updated on how well its holding up.

BTW, what's a good way to just check how long the battery lasts? Should I turn off screen saver as well and just run it with no power saving options on?

Download PC Doctor from IBM. It has a battery rundown test that writes to the floppy every minute. After it turns off you can read the result of the last test. It's a HUGE drain, especially if you use the external floppy and put in a CD to read during the test.

It is a crushing drain on the batteries, so isn't realistic of "normal" use, but you can use it to compare batteries with other batteries.

And you can power your machine until it turns off without having to worry about the power failure corrupting your OS of choice.
