ultrabay 250MB Zip drive

#1 Post by ieee488 » Tue Apr 27, 2010 6:48 pm

I bought a used Thinkpad 600E on eBay a few years ago, and the seller included a Ultrabay 250MB Zip drive p/n 00n7953

It doesn't appear to fit into the 600E.

Which models will this go into?

Not sure which models it will go in to, or what exact drive it is.

But I don't think there was an official 250MB Zip drive made for the IBM UltraslimBay in the 600 series. There was a 100MB device (I have one or two), and you could get aftermarket 250MB zip drives as well (which I also have a crappy version of, that came without a proper encasing). There were a couple popular aftermarket drive makers: VST was one and there was another reliable one that started with a C..., I think.

Thanks.

I just thought since it was a bonus, I'd try it to see if it works in my TP600E. But since it doesn't, I'll just store it way.

The 250 Drive I have fits the T-23 (and probably any TP with a similar bay, some of the A's, the T30 and R up to the 40.

For my 600X I have the VST drive (I think I have 3 of them; PM me if you'd like to swap). Zip disks are getting cheap like floppies did many years ago; nobody uses them any more. In fact, I use mostly USB drives on the 600X as well as the newer machines now.

Based on the information I found at http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ultrabay_Devices , it looks like I have the Ultrabay 2000 based on the photograph, but the part number doesn't quite match.

A 250MB Zip was apparently available in Ultrabay II and Ultrabay Plus based on information at http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ultrabay but no photos of those drives.

The 600 series uses the 'Ultraslimbay' which is different from Ultrabay, Ultrabay II, Ultrabay Plus, Ultrabay 2000, or Ultrabay Slim, etc. AFAIK no other Thinkpads use the same bay as the 600/600E/600X.
Current Thinkpads:
X31, X40, X61T, X61, X201, X220 (i7 IPS), W520 (2720QM/2000M/FHD), T440p (i7-4800MQ/GF730GT/FHD)
Dells: Latitude C840, Precision M70, Precision M4400, M6400 (WUXGA), M6600, M6700
Daily driver: Dell XPS 13 w/Kaby Lake+Iris Pro+TB3
