Boot Issues with 380ED

Hey guys & girls,
I just recently started to work on a Thinkpad 380ED that I acquired awhile back. I can't seem to find the original hard drive that came with it and wanted to install one of my many spare 20-60 gig HDD's in it. The only problem I seem to encounter is that limit, which I just read about last night after a week of internet free trouble shooting... Someone on another post mentioned over lay software, which the links are dead. Does anyone have a good link to some good software for this application?
Also, this laptop has some issues starting up every so often. Sometimes I plug it in and turn slide the switch and it turns on. Other times I slide it and there is no response from the motherboard, the system "charging" light is on but there is no activation light from the switch.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
