Alright, I recently got an iSeries thinkpad; a very weird thing indeed. It works fine, has some interesting things, and would make a nice portable windows 98 laptop (yes I've been wanting a 701c, but that's another story alltogether). Either that or it can be a CD player lol.
Here's the support page & model:

However... getting a hard drive to fit is another story. I figured it was IDE, as... it cannot be anything else, and I took an IBM travelstar out of it... I had to take the HDD out, as that was the deal if I were to take it.
But the pins seem to get stuck on little pillars inside the IDE connector (pillars screwing the connector to the mobo). I had to actually rip off the jumper pins on one side of the HDD (it's an 80 gb fujitsu IDE HDD); now the LEFT side does go on, but the right side is still obscured. I figured this out when I took out the keyboard to see what was blocking it; removing the keyboard was extraordinarily strange...
I'm pretty positive it's IDE, unless acer threw in a curveball when making these. I sure hope not...
Yes it's the right size, the HDD fits perfectly fine in the caddy.
