I got a Thinkpad i1410 from an auction that powers on with a green light.
I could hear hard disk spinning with a sound of magnetic sensor heads moving but not the POST beep.
The LCD is complete dark blank as well.
I've connected the PC to the external monitor but nothing was displayed.
The CD tray eject botton was working. 32MB RAM was in place.
Lastly, it wouldn't turn off the power by sliding the switch to on position for indefinite period.

Overall, the PC looks like new. There is hardly a used mark on it. So what could be wrong?

Is this the problem with the CMOS battery or worse yet, do I have a bad system board?

I doubt that it's just a dead CMOS battery. I've just been playing with an old i1400 and replaced the battery. Before I replaced it there was an error message on screen saying that it was dead. Sorry to say that I think your problems run deeper than a battery.

An i series 1410 was my first Thinkpad! 266Mhz Celeron right? Later upgraded mine to 300Mhz with a processor board from a 1411.

Look for the Hardware maintenance manual on the Lenovo website, it should have a troubleshooting section.

The way you describe the problem, it does not sound good. Try a different memory chip. If that doesn't work and if you don't mind doing some disassemble work, you could try to find a replacement system board on Ebay.

I agree with the above poster...try a different stick of ram, if you can,,,
