Did IBM or MS make software for writing CD's? I have a CD-RW in my 600X running windows 2000. What's the best CD-RW software available?

Do I need drivers specificaly for the drive? Windows detects it, and it works perfectly, and that's wierd because IBM says the FRU# 08k9617 is an UltraBay 2000 drive, but the 600X has an Ultraslim Bay. Are they supposed to be compatible? Or have I discovered some big IBM secret?

The driver should be included with Windows. Roxio was what I think older ThinkPads used, but I don't think it's on Lenovo's site any longer. If you're looking for some good free software there's CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn. Both are free. You just got to look out for the Google Toolbar when installing.

Now that's funny. I pasted "Roxio" into google and found an article on microsoft.com about it being a part of Windows Media Player 9.

It wouldn't seem the drive is supported. I'd prefer the 3MB size of CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn to the 750MB of the ThinkPad offering, which is going to try to take over everything.

I personally use CDBurnerXP and it does what I need it to do. Burn ISOs. Burn Data Discs. I have not used the audio portion of it as I do not burn audio CDs anymore. IIRC the Roxio software is a huge 300+mb file! That's like driving a yacht that gets 4mpg to do errands! I like CDBurnerXP for it's small file size and the fact that it's freeware

Plus the fact it is continually being updated and improved.

What about features? What does Roxio do with that 300Mb that CDBurnerXP doesn't? Do these work with Windows 98/2000?

CD Burner XP works with all versions of Windows starting with Windows 2000 SP4.

Doesn't XP come with something to write ISO's? Or was it an XP Power Toy?

I am thinking very seriously about upgrading.

Not that I am aware of. The only thing that would come close is Windows Media Player's ability to burn CDs from a burn list. No ISOs though.

There is a power toy called ISO Recorder. Windows XP does not come with it built-in. It is not made by Microsoft, but they have kinda-sorta endorsed it. It is very light, just a shell extension and a window with a progress bar.
