Look on the bottom of the ThinkPad where the barcode is. Under that barcode, you'll see some numbers. If you see the numbers 9546 anywhere, then the computer has the mWave sound system and you neeed the mWave drivers. If there is the number 9547 anywhere, you need the ESS drivers as the computer has the ESS chip in it. Another way to tell what your ThinkPad has in it is by looking on the left side next to the power switch, if the computer has a built in phone jack, then you have the mWave sound system. If there is no phone jack, you probably have the ESS card.

What you should do is in the device manager, remove all devices pertaining to the soundcard, then install the proper drivers, then restart Windows. After that, go into the ThinkPad configuration utility and make sure that audio is enabled.

It might take a few tries at those steps, but it should work. I had a similar problem with a Dell OptiPlex GXa desktop i accquired a few days ago where I at first couldn't get the drivers to run properly.
