TP 600 died. Moved to 600e. Win 98SE display problem

#1 Post by Olde Man » Tue Dec 21, 2010 12:18 pm

My elderly and well used TP 600 suddenly got a disconnect at the power plug entrance. So I jerked the HD and put it in a 600e. Everything worked except this.

Display is;

Super VGA 1024x768 on Std. PCI Graphics Adapter.

Screen Area 648x480 pixels and the 'slide' refuses to move.

Any suggestions?

Also, any salvage from the TP 600 worth keeping?

The 600E needs a different graphics driver than the 600. Download and install this one.

I would hold onto the 600 if the screen is good, and keyboard. You might be able to use 'em again on the 600E should it's fail. RAM is interchangeable too.

My computer tells me I already have that download. On the off chance, I had an earlier version, I installed it to no avail.

I can remember having this problem once before and I cured it. But inasmuch as I have a memory with the half-life of a gnat, I don't remember how.

I've run into some variation of this problem on my 600X under Win98SE too, but I'm not sure of the correct fix.

I wonder if it would help to apply the Win98SE Supplemental File patch that relates to proper identification of the Thinkpad LCD? Theoretically, your adapter would then show Thinkpad LCD or something similar instead of "Super VGA 1024x768". There are three(?) patches in the Windows 98 Supplemental File diskette. The one I'm thinking about is the "monitor.inf" file.

I actually think I've gotten around this issue without needing to apply any patches, but then again, I've always installed this monitor.inf file during initial installaion on all my Windows 98 installs, so I'm not sure if it will make any difference.

IDK. Have you tried removing the graphics drivers from device manager? Then re-boot and when it asks to search for the correct driver, point the installer to your newly downloaded 600E driver file. Maybe once the old driver is out of the way, the correct one will get installed...or maybe not. But, it's worth a try if you haven't already.
