Right now my 770z starts up with an error box, when i click okay it brings me to a menu to select the year and month.
I've heard that their is a battery under the ram door (a round watch battery) that can be replaced to solve this problem. I'm wondering what type of battery to purchase and how to install it.

Look on eBay for a 770 CMOS battery. Very easy to install. It is located under the memory cover. You could also remove the battery and take it to Radio Shack or WalMart and probably find a replacement for it.

This is correct. Replacing this battery will solve your problem in most cases.
For the 770 series, including the 770Z, all you need is a standard CR2025 battery available at any hardware or watch store. No need for eBay -- you'll pay more for shipping than the value of the battery.
To replace it, simply unscrew the RAM cover on the bottom of your machine with a regular small phillips screwdriver. You will see the battery as soon as you open the door. It is usually held in place by a piece of tape, and it sits inside a circular, spring-loaded compartment. To remove it, pull up the tape, and push the battery sideways against the sping until you can free it from the black plastic corners holding it in place. Slide in your replacement battery, positive sign showing up. Replace the tape. Replace the cover.
That's it.

Thanks for all the info. I'm currently away from home (where my laptop is) but I'll be purchasing the battery this weekend and installing it. I'll update here with my results.

I changed the battery (went to walmart and it was only $3) and now my 770z starts up fine. It was really easier than I thought it would be. Thanks again.
