560z sound under XP

Morning kids,
I've recently put WinXP on my Thinkpad 560z and surprisingly it's given a much-needed kick in the pants to it - the computer feels really usable now. I previously ran Windows 2000 Pro on it and it was rock solid but slow as molasses.
The only thing that is really disappointing to me is that sound has stopped working under XP - it was fine in Windows 2000 which puzzles me.
XP loads the "Crystal WDM" device driver. I read on a few websites that under XP the sound device inexplicably conflicts with the IR port, so I disabled the IR port in the device manager.
I've tried using a driver from Crystal's legacy product website with no luck, and i've tried using the NT4 driver that IBM seem to point to in their driver matrix for the 560z.
I managed to get it to make sound happily a few times by changing the assigned IRQ to the sound device a few times to different values, but after a reboot or a sleep it stops working again
The error that the driver gives is "Code 10".
Please help me, otherwise I think i'm going to ditch my baby
