I just got a 600e, thanks to another forum member.now ive got to diagnoise and repair it.first off i pulled out the battery and it gave off a burnt smell and i could see the male prongs on the comp had got hot,so i then inspected the circuit board it showed no obvious overheat problems.my question would be what caused the battery to get hot?faulty charging system,power surge,or maybe someone didnt use the proper a/c adapter and used the wrong polarity?anyway now i have a no power situation and thats the first order of buissness before i can fix anything else.
The next question is will the comp.power up if its missing the HD and ram sticks?does the 600e have a seperate charging cicuit board or is it intergrated into the motherboard?

The computer should power up without RAM sticks as there is 32mb onboard and the hard drive is irrelevant to whether or not the computer will power up. From what IBM support told me, you'll need to get a new motherboard. I would have done that myself, but I don't have the money right now to spend on unneccesary stuff, that's why I traded it away for parts.

As for the battery, I never saw any weird burn marks on it but I did notice the mark inside the battery compartment. That mark had me baffled as well.

yep the whole thing got hot.so if there is a seperate d/c card or something maybe it didnt hurt the mother board probably burnt some diodes.i can put my hands on another used motherbord for cheap.but that would take all the fun out of figureing out why and what went wrong,tinkering you know.lol
the 755 you sent my daughter is hollerin for it already,i put a fresh battery in her and she powered right up.i hope its got a seperate voltage card.it wouldnt be a biggy to leave it the way it is ive got 3 batteries and my 760el will charge them.it would just be a pain in the butt swapping them out all the time.
