just toss 701C with bad motherboard?

#1 Post by ieee488 » Fri Apr 01, 2011 7:24 pm

Is there any point in trying to salvage the keyboard which is in very good shape?

I don't have the screwdrivers to take the unit apart. The hard drive exterior had a sticky coating of what I believe to be dried soda pop which leads me to think that the motherboard is damaged. It shuts down when I try to go beyond the CMOS battery error.

if you don't want to mess with it, put it on the marketplace and see who might want to take it off your hands as a project machine or for parts salvage. alternatively, you could get the tools to take it apart and fix it yourself or part it out on the marketplace.

good luck whatever you choose to do.

It looks like it isn't worth much.

I'll be trying to take as much of it apart as I can when I get a T6 screwdriver tomorrow from Harbor Freight.

The T6 is easy, but you also need a rare T1 to remove the screws on the front under the keyboard-ridge!

Yes, after reading some of the posts here about the 701C, I know. :)

I just want to see how much I can take apart with just an investment of $8.01 :|
Rather silly investing that kind of money on this laptop, but the elcheapo precision screwdriver set should come in handy elsewhere.

The entire inside bottom of the case had the sticky soda residue. There was leakage from the main battery.

Still not sure why the unit was failing since the reside wasn't on the pc boards.
