Does anyone know of a source for batteries for 701c models? The online suppliers that list them that I have tried cannot supply, quoting lack of stock. Thanks!

or re cell it yourself, i know i saw a post or 2 somewhere on this forum about rebuilding packs in general...

the 701 uses Nickel Cadmium (NiCad)... which are like Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH)... just heavier and less juice... As NiMH you will get 10.8V and 1700 to 1800ma, the original NiCad was 10.8V @ 1500ma or so... the 2 types of batteries are functionally equivalent. The 701 uses 9 cells and they are most likely 14.2mm in diameter and either: 50mm (AA), 29mm (2/3 AA), or 43mm (4/5 AA) in length (the 3 "standard" sizes) and can be had for about $2 each... so $18 and some of your own labor :)

From googling around, the case is a pita to get apart (tends to crack easily).

Don't know how comfortable you are with a soldering iron, but to make the job easier you should be able to find batteries with pre-soldered tabs on em. (Soldering is a good skill to learn if your gonna be using old hardware as a hobby :P) Just carefully "crack" open the case, then google for any numbers you find on the 9 cells inside...

NiMH and NiCad are good ones to learn on... they don't carry the explosion/fire danger as Li-Ion do with lithium contacting moisture. And past the soldering (the easy part IMO), what your normally paying for to have them professionally re-celled is getting the case apart... I did a NimH for my 760 and althogh it was a PAIN to get the case apart and didn't look too pretty... worked VERY well. That was my 1st attempt at re-celling a battery)

YUP! that is the page i saw linked to... I like how his replacements are much shorter but provide higher capacity then the old tech originals :P

EDIT: Since this I have received my own 701C with an EXLPODED battery... My thread here about that and a rebuild of the battery
