600X memory

#1 Post by uncle_geoff » Sat Mar 26, 2005 11:46 am

:?
Would like some help understanding the memory in my 600X - 2645RRR PIII 450.

Bought second hand and fitted with 2 x 128mb modules. Only showed up as 196032 at boot and XP reported 196meg. Removed modules in sequence and one found to be completely dead but didnt appear to affect the machines operation. Purchased a Samsung 128mb module (on eBay), fitted it and now boot reports 458176 and XP 448meg. So I am a bit puzzled by these results as the figures just do not add up. Is there a reason for this 'mis-reporting' ?

No big deal, just curious!

TIA
Geoff

One of the new sticks is not what it appears, i.e. 256MB rather than 128MB.

That would appear to be the case with 256+128+64 = 448 ...

It was sold as a 128 and I dont know enough to know the difference ..

Thanks!

Not sure if this is the answer but the Cache memory on the Motherboard is most often reported at boot-up. Even within Windows, if part of your memory is shared by other components it will show up with slightly less than what you have in it in the form of RAM. In the case of your 600X, this isn't so within windows, but at boot-up, I would assume that the motherboard's memory is also being counted.

Don't be too hard on yourself Uncle, most folks can't tell the difference between memory size by simply eyeballing it.

I'm not complaining ... seems I got quite a good deal out of this ...

Thanks for your responses!
