My 600x is getting very hot on the bottom towards the back. This happens whether the laptop is plugged in or not. This is something new.

Can anyone give me ideas on what to check?

The exhaust port for the CPU fan is on the back left corner. Check to see if the fan is working.

It appears to be but there is not much air coming out. Is there a way to increase the fan speed?

Maybe Thinkpad Fan Controller. I don't know if it will work on a 600X, though. But you can try it and see.

Most gripe about the 600x fan being noisy (relative term), but on these forums i've seen several complaints, so you should definately be able to tell if it is on...

It could be a bad fan (gummed up, sewing machine oil might help for a bit), the air path could be blocked internally (dust bunny anyone ), fix with canned air alone or possible disassembly.

By the way, what OS are you running? Older linux drivers had an issue: http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux ... /2303.html

But if recent and no major software changes happened, i would lean more towards the dust or fan slowing.

So 1st I would try some air directed in the exaust port, if it works it's only temporary as the dust will prolly re-lodge itself soon enough (would need to disassemble and clean it. (You should see the dust bunny I just pulled out of a 2005 HP of mine... it was BAD )

I'm going to try to clean the fan. The noise of the fan doesn't bother me because at least I l know it's working. Besides, my hearing isn't so good any more and no one else has complained.

I looked at tpfancontrol but I don't have any confidence in beta programs.

By the way, I run windows pro and 320 megs of ram.

Yea, I'm the same way on noise... I would rather KNOW it is spinning... it's like having a railroad near your home... after a while you don't even notice it unless you try to

It really all depends on who make said beta... I have used Alpha software before that was better then retail (*cough* windows *cough*). It really all depends on how often such beta software is updated, a lot of open source software is constantly in a beta state (for years even).

Microsoft has been selling Beta operating systems for YEARS, they just don't put the beta mark on it, look how many times they release a piece of software, only to turn around and release TONS of fixes to it after their beta testers (retail customers) find the major issues with it

heh, in this case it didn't really make a difference, but always helps to know what the OS is Always best to fully state the info, version, service pack level, architecture (32 vs 64bit). Some tips will apply to one, some, or all.
