I was thinking the same for the J(apan) U(S) E(urope) at the end... but then i found all these A(sia??), 1 thru 9(???), W(???), M(???), F(rance??), C(???)

And then the 1st 2 digits... could be... 2 diff processors tween the C & CS models (is the 701CS still a 2630?), 3 diff hard drives(360, 540 or 720MB), then all the possible non-standard ram combos...

Would be really cool to find the actual meanings of these, thus the post. I know like for old cars... the option codes are now WELL documented... you can find the options sticker in a car and for most brands restore them to there EXACT factory specs.

Plus I see a lot of questions on eBay asking for model numbers, was thinking these people were asking cause they knew how to decode em :P

People just want to be able to look up the original specs, in my opinion.

Deciphering the 7-character mumbo-jumbo is way more difficult than decoding a VIN (or a chassis number on an older/imported vehicles) ....and I've been down both of these roads more than once...

There's another part of the code, which is the actual serial #...

Enough to drive you nuts. I've given up on all of that a long time ago.

Here's to patience... ...may it get you somewhere, ozzymud...
