Remove dead battery?

The battery on my 600 is completely dead and has been for some time.
Is it likely that my machine is still trying to charge it? The amber light flashes constantly, so perhaps that's the case. If so, isn't that a big waste of energy? Would I be better off removing the battery completely?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe not, Both bateries are dead on my 770, but if I don't have one in then using cord power won't work., simply because the current is flowing through the battery.

Maybe, but a 600 is not a 770.
Remove the battery before the charging system burns out.

This is a short route to winding upp with a dead 600!
Remove the battery ASAP.
Never leave a battery in a Thinkpad if the charge light is constantly blinking.
