Have recently fitted new HDD due to failure and forced to re-install everything. Had some trouble with setting up the display and received some great help here which resolved the problem.The current difficulty is installing a modem which is now becoming desperate as I plan to take it on a long distance trip in a few short weeks.
There is an on-board modem, of which I can find no spec. but was working prior to the refit. I have a new Trust ASDL 235 Speedlink modem for use at home, both of which throw up errors at some stage in trying to install. I also have a PC card modem which I have not yet tried to install.
I am confused that the modem is showing up on port com2 when the communications port is com1. Trying the 'Install New Hardware' utility gives me a list of IBM modems but I can find no reference anywhere to tell me which one is fitted. (TP600 2645 51U)
Any help to configure the internal first will be greatfully received.

Swing over to IBM's website and pull up the downloads list for your model.

One of the available downloads should be the modem driver for your system. Pull it down, and follow the installation instructions.

Since the modem was working prior to the refit, it should work when you get the drivers installed.

Thanks Rob, I have aready been there and it's not as easy as it sounds. I cannot establish which model is fitted so selecting the correct driver is a gamble. Further as this M/C was not new when I bought it there's no guarantee that it's the original. I do have a Thinkpad modem (unspecified) installed according to the Device Manager and drivers but when I try the modem test it sees the modem but produces no dial tone. The obvious response to check the connection, which is good, provides no further help. I feel that the problem lies with the configuration which is the part that baffles me.

The "Communications Port" is your serial port, unless it specifies otherwise.

Did you have the modem plugged in to an _analog_ phone line when running the test?

Tell everyone what OS you've installed. The drivers for your modem look pretty clear cut to me on the matrix:

Sorry for delay in reply, unable to get back sooner. Yes, standard phone line as used previously. OS is Win 98SE. Drivers from IBM downloaded and installed.
The system shows that a 'Thinkpad Modem' is installed and working and drivers are installed. The modem quick test does not produce a dial tone.
I am now about to start over following the details from the IBM site.
