E430 Memory upgrade

#1 Post by fredrab » Sun Nov 25, 2012 8:13 pm

Hi, this is a great forum!
I just ordered a Thinkpad Edge E430 with i7 processor with 4gb ram which I will remove.
I also ordered 16gb ram (2x8) from Crucial.
My question is where do I install the two 8gb sticks? under the keyboard or on the bottom?
Also, will the machine recognize and use a total of 32gb ram?
Thanks very much.

Both memory slots are easily accessed under the bottom cover.

Check out page 63 of the HMM at http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobil ... 438_01.pdf

There are only two RAM slots on the E430, making the 16GB your max. The W520/W530 allows for 32GB

Enjoy your new ThinkPad!

Re: E430 Memory upgrade - still perplexed

Thank you very much.
I did consider the W530, and it was tempting, but the extra weight is a problem.
I am aware of the POSSIBLE locations to install the ram, but, would like to know if installing under the laptop or underneath the keyboard is better, or if 8 gb should go into each slot.
I didn't take delivery yet, but I believe there are two slots under the bottom and at least one directly beneath the keyboard.
It is difficult to determine exactly since the one size fits all manuals indicate silly things like "your computer may look different than pictured".
I tried to get the answer from tech support, but they won't give any info without a serial number (which I don't yet have).
Regards & thanks again,

Aha, I was misinformed in believing there were more than two slots.
Apparently only 2, confirmed by Crucial's site.
Thanks again.
