E430 Noise: Fan or HDD?

#1 Post by rablaw » Sun Dec 23, 2012 9:17 am

I've had my new E430 for a few days now, and so far I am very happy with it; but, there is an annoying noise periodically.
I'm not sure if it is the fan or HDD. Can anyone help me to determine which? and if it is normal? It starts with sort of a mild "thump", as if something is starting up, then sounds like a fan, then it quiets down, all very quickly.
If it is the HDD, I might just bite the bullet and get a SSD, but that would cost about $400.00. I might be better off returning the laptop and buying something else with an i7 Quad core.
Thanks.
