Replacing DVD drive in Thinkpad Edge

#1 Post by bobbyarrow » Wed Sep 18, 2013 5:35 pm

The DVD drive in my thinkpad has ceased working. I've been trying to find out what a suitable replacement would be, or even if it's possible to replace it at all. After hours of useless searching on the internet (why is this so hard?) I've come here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I believe my model is 0578CTO, but honestly, there are so many numbers/designations associated with these machines I'm not sure how a normal person is supposed to identify these things.

Thanks for any help.

The connectors on these are pretty standard. From the HMM, page 59, it looks like there one screw to remove on the bottom and the drive should slide out. I'm not familiar with the Edge, but in general, the only other issue is if uses a non-standard bezel, you'd need to swap the two bezels. They're held on by small clips and they can sometimes break. If it uses a standard bezel, you should be able to just slide the new drive in.

it's a pretty easy process. Just one screw to remove the drive. Check ebay for replacement drive. I know of a few people who swapped out the dvd drive for a second harddrive and put their dvd drive on ebay. I just saw a few on there under $50 bucks.
