e420s DVD drive sound on start

#1 Post by honelnik » Wed Jan 08, 2014 3:02 pm

Hi,

Ever since I first got my e420s it makes this loud sound whenever it boots, wakes up from standby or I plug or unplug usb.

I was wondering whether this is normal for e420s and whether or not is there a workaround for this since it started to annoy me lately.

I took a video of it using my phone, since my phone has really crappy Mic you can't hear it as loud as it is.

You mean the HDD spinup sound?

Do you have a disc in the optical drive?

Hi,

thanks for response.
It's actually the DVD drive, there's no disc in it but it's the exact same sound when I insert one.
It also does his when I insert a usb key or restart explorer.exe, the DVD drive gets initialized for some reason.

Any idea how to prevent this?

Thanks

Have you got all the Intel system drivers installed?
Also check if any of your USB ports are damaged.

all drivers installed. no usb damage whatsoever.
as I said this also happens when I kill explorer.exe, or even start a wmp player

I tried disabling the DVD drive in the bios, but the sound remains

That's really strange. Did you test without DVD drive? Or can't the drive be pulled on e420?

the e420s has "unibody", there's no easy access to it but I'll try to get in and pull it out later this week

Nah, don't. Too much flimsy plastic on the Edge series.

In the explorer (windows button + e), do you have a rightclick option on the optical drive to "power off" or "disable"? I have that with my W520; I have it basically always turned off. I once forgot to take at a disc and then it would spin up at every wake cycle; so annoying; but turning the whole drive off solves that problem.

I know this is old, but most of my DVD drive equipped laptops do this. It's normal behaviour.
MacBook Pro Retina 13in
Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (8GB RAM, needs 16GB and 4G modem)
Lenovo 3000 N200 (DEAD), Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 (stripped down for CPU and RAM, Dell Latitude D430 and D830 (needs new batteries and HDDs), Fizzbook Spin NL1/2
MSI GT640 (new SSD needed and caddy), Lenovo X131e
