E540 Power Issue

#1 Post by Colinmi » Sun Jun 28, 2015 5:25 pm

Hello,
I'm new here and am hoping to get a little help from some of you more experienced with these E series machines. Hopefully sometime in the future I will be able to return the favor.

I have an E540 here with the proper Lenovo AC adapter but no battery. When I try to power it on I just get the red dot to light in the ThinkPad logo but nothing else. Do I need a battery connected to get it started or should I start looking for some other issue? There are no beeps and I have connected an external monitor to be sure that it is not just a dead screen.
The manual did not say whether a battery was required when running on AC.

Thanks,

Colin

Colin,

The E540 should boot fine without a battery using the AC Adapter. You should at least get a POST.

Be sure the AC Adapter isn't faulty before proceeding.

I'll just continue this thread with my own case, in order not to create redundant threads.
My ThinkPad E540 never had any Problems, until yesterday.
I don't know whether this is related to the problem, but I am currently developing an OS of my own and I run it on my Edge using an USB stick. I ran into some unexpected behaviour some days ago (vram suddenly filled with random characters) and shut down the Edge manually (Power button).
When I tried to restart it, i got a FAN ERROR, which I solved by resetting the CMOS battery.
After that, I was able to boot into Windows again.
But since shutting down the Laptop again (using Windows shutdown button), whenever i start the laptop, only the Power LED on the lower right lights up.
The Screen does not get any Power (the background lights are off). I connected the Laptop to an external monitor but it doesn't get any signal.
When pressing the Power button to shutdown the Laptop from this "frozen" state, nothing happens, and I have to press it for several seconds or unplug the power cable. (A short beep sound occurs when i do that).
Unplugging the power cable and pressing the power button for 30 seconds did not change anything as far as I observed.

Thanks in advance

Status update:
I resetted my CMOS battery once again and have not yet run into further troubles. Booting went fine.
I'll post again when I encounter the same problem again.
