Upgrade Edge 14 CPU to i5 560M (Model 057937P)

#1 Post by henriquebach » Tue Jun 30, 2020 9:04 am

Hello guys, my Edge 14 has an i3 370M and the performance in every linux distro (except mate, kde plasma, xfce and even Windows 10) perform poorly.
I do not want to run Windows because this is supposedly be my linux machine and the trackpad drivers in windows 10 are horrible. I really tryed to like
plasma but something in it feels unpollish (i know, most of you will freakout, but leave me alone D:) and I really like the gnome desktop, especilly Pop_OS.
So I would like to upgrade the i3 in this machine, the i7 640M cost is more than double on aliexpress compared to i5 560M but from what I research, this i5 would do the job really well.
Can you guys confirm if the i5 will fit on my Edge 14 Model 057937P?

Get the ThinkPad Edge 14, Edge 15, E40, E50 manual from the HMM link above.
It has a huge list of replacement CPUs in it, incl. that i5-560M.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Thank you, I've found models 0579-something but not the my model. This means that any model with 0579 first numbers will work?

The i5 and i7 only offer turbo boosting over the i3. The i3 is a competent processor. Does your machine have an HDD or an SSD? If it has an HDD, upgrading to an SSD will yield much more of a performance boost than switching the CPU.

Yes, I already have SSD, from what I saw in CPUBOSS comparisson the i5 560M is significant better in single core tasks and better in every other aspect, but not by alot.
If I could feel ok using Mate, XFCE or KDE Plasma I wouldn't be switching the processor, because the performance on those are solid and a bit better than windows but i really don't like these environments(plasma came close).
I hope the i5 be enough to run clean gnome( or elementary os), the best result I got is using Fedora Gnome, but when I connect to a 1080p Monitor become a bit choppy (but better then ubuntu and pop os).

I have a main computer with Windows 10, so this computer is just for web browsing and watch videos (most of games on linux is almost unplayable, so i have windows 10 dual boot when/if I need it).
