Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 15 BIOS Force Reflash

#1 Post by ProjectNightmare » Wed Feb 09, 2022 7:32 am

Hello there!

this is my first post so things may get off to a shaky start.

So i have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 (Type: 0319-3tg) and i have two of them, one of which i am trying to sell

the issue is that once the initial startup screen has passed the fans immediately go up to full and after 30 mins exactly it will hard shut down.
this fault i to do with the ME Region being corrupted, unfortunately the thinkpad is already on bios 2.05 which is the latest it supports. so i cannot just flash an update.

is there a way i can flash an earlier BIOS (or better pull the version off of my working thinkpad) without physically removing the bios chip? (i will hardware flash if necessary)

I've had the exact same issue and am in the nearly the exact situation. I have two. One with old bios and no issue, and one with new bios and the high fan/30 minute shutdown issue. I use one for school and I'm trying to fix up the other for my friend who needs a laptop. I've yet to find a solution, but I'm glad to know we've settled on it being a bios/motherboard incompatibility or something.

This has been happening for many years already.
The culprit is Intel ME (Management Engine) spyware.
For more info, see this: https://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.p ... 62#p807562

I also suggest you read this Intel Forum post: https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-vP ... -p/1348188
Look for posts from user SJack2 onward, where it gets interesting.
Not sure if this solves your problem though.

PS:
If you want to do any BIOS updates/downgrades, always use a CD/DVD or USB stick.
Do NOT do any of this inside Windows!
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
