Hello,
I have really strange problem with my Lenovo laptop. It runs everything good but as soon as I open web browsers the temperature goes within seconds over 90 and it shuts down. I have used new thermal paste and also tried to change power management settings. But nothing helps. I have also installed a new windows 7.
I know there are some services which causes the CPU temperature to go up suddenly despite CPU moderate usage. If I don't use web browsers the laptop runs for hours without any issue. Is that CPU manufacturing fault or main board.
I have bought this laptop from ebay. It was a second hand laptop. But I have noticed the processor was i3 which was lower as mentioned in the specifications so the seller has changed the processor. May he had also issue with Core i5 480M. It shows that this laptop has problem with core i5 480M. I think after the processor change it is causing problem.

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15 0301 shuts down due to overheating
There are a number of threads here where a Thinkpad with a 1st-generation Core i5/i7 CPU like yours experienced unusually high CPU temperatures, with some shutting down due to overheating. So there is reason to believe that the CPU change is the cause
Modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox) are able to take advantage of multiple CPU cores, which explains the high CPU usage. But if you didn't run into problems with CPU temperatures with your previous CPU, then it's more likely that the new processor is at fault.
However, if you put back the original CPU and still experience temperature issues, then it may be a problem with proper installation of the heatsink-- in other words, the heatsink's contact plate isn't lying completely flat against the bare silicon dies of the processor.

According to the HMM, that machine could have AMD or Intel CPU and integrated or discrete graphics.
There are FOUR different fans for that machine, maybe they put the wrong one on?
