Call me kooky and a lot of people do, but I think the X100e is a much better looking machine. That machine with the CULV is a winning product as long as it's not too expensive. The silver trim is fugly. Thanks for the link.

I agree. Screen is still glossy, as every Thinkpad Edge. Already a review on Engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/28/leno ... 11-review/.

But I am quite happy to see more Core ULV on Thinkpad. An X100e with Core ULV is possible.

Nice one big panel:

I have to admit I'm pretty intrigued by this machine.

According to what I've read around the web so far, it seems to be almost the best laptop of this size/price ratio. It solves the issues of the X100e. A matte finish display and I would perhaps be interested.

North America isn't surprisingly targeted for now.

What is the difference between this and the x100e? It looks like the same thing to me.

They are the same size, but the Edge 11 uses Intel and AMD CPUs while the X100e uses AMDs exclusively. Historically, the issue with AMD notebooks CPUs is the run hotter and offer less battery life. I think the X100e owners here would concur. If you know how to work the system either via the outlet or ebay and have the time to wait a bit, for not much more money you can slide into a X200 or X201. Those would be better ultraportables unless you're on a very tight budget.

An Edge 11 or X100e with the Intel ULV CPU would be nice, assuming it's as fast as the AMD dual cores!

Apparently, the Edge 11 won't be sold in North America at this point. Perhaps the X100e will begin to offer the Intel ULV CPU?

The video states up to 7 hours runtime, but shows the machine with the 3 cell batttery installed. The 6 cell battery would be required for "up to 7 hours runtime". The 3 cell battery may be good for 2 to 2.5 hours.

Also, 2.9 lbs. (as stated in the video) is with the 3 cell battery.

I definitely think the X100e should be called a ThinkPad Edge 11 everywhere. That is what it is.

I had both machines, actually all three machines side by side in a test.
The Edge 11 is virtually identical to the X100e, with an added port. Same keyboard (with red function keys, X100e has blue ones), same case, same everything, but a silver ring around the base.

The X100e AMD version has a higher Win7 rating than the Edge AMD version, which is more modern but less powerful.

You can buy an Intel i3 ULV Edge 11 and take the matte LCD from the X100e, I was told.
They are supposed to have the same interface and size. Then you have the ultimate Netbook.

There was an interesting article on Laptopmag.com about the American preference on large systems:
Americans prefer large things, think SUV cars , huge houses, McDonald's Big Meal etc.
For notebooks 15.6" is the sweet spot and even 17" sell well in the US. Nobody likes 14" and smaller. Main selling argument ist CHEAP.

In Europe and Asia it is the other way round. They prefer smaller size and more advanced integration, willing to pay quite a bit more. Main selling argument ist QUALITY and USABILITY.

Lenovo does not sell the 17" IdeaPads in Europe. And they don't sell 11" Edge in the US. That's the reason.

The X100e is hobbled by the lack of Intel processors.

The Edge 11" is hobbled by the godawful metal strip.

Hoping for CULV in the X100e soon!

That's interesting. Mostly right. But I think things are changing. North American people are becoming more and more urban, they start buying smaller products, more than before. Parking an SUV in a crowding downtown area doesn't make sense, a 17" laptop on a tiny Starbucks table either.

I hope Lenovo is waiting for the AMD Brazos/Zacate for the X100e (and maybe the Edge 11), which seems really good for 18w:
