Numeric keypad

#1 Post by evtate » Wed Feb 16, 2011 6:11 pm

I have a ThinkPad Edge 14. I've started using an application that makes heavy use of the numeric keypad (as opposed to the regular number keys at the top of the keyboard) for shortcuts. There's no numeric keypad on the ThinkPad Edge.

I know I can get an external USB numeric keypad. As a workaround for the short term, I'm told that many laptops have a way to use normal keys on the right side of the keyboard as though they were a numeric keypad. Is this true on the ThinkPad Edge, and if so what are the key mappings? I couldn't find anything in the Lenovo documentation. Thanks.

As per this image, it doesn't look like the Edge has the keypad keys, let alone a NumLock key.
Compare to a T61 keyboard, for example, you can see how various keys on the right side of the keyboard have "sub" numbering that indicates their use when Numlock is turned on.
I'd get used to a USB keypad, unless someone knows of some kind of software solution :( Fwiw, I used to play an online game that used number keys a lot. It took a bit of getting used to using the number row at the top of the keyboard, but assuming your applications aren't super picky you always have those.

Yep, that's my keyboard all right. I'll try a USB keyboard. If it doesn't run afoul of the product endorsement rules on the forum, can you suggest one that's known to work with the ThinkPad Edge? Lenovo does sell one, but I know there are cheaper ones on the market.

Any keyboard you can find will work with ThinkPad Edge. It can be wired, wireless, bluetooth, etc.. As long as it is keyboard, it will work.

I ended up getting the Lenovo keypad after reading various reviews. It works just fine. Thanks.
