E420s speaker problem - no sound

#1 Post by lewdlobster » Sun May 08, 2011 8:01 am

Hello,

I've had my new E420s for two days, and unfortunatly I've already got a huge problem. The speakers refuse to sound.

The problem:
I'm not sure what happened (speakers were working fine), I installed the lenovo recovery thing and made one reset point and shut down the computer. The following day when I turned on the computer didn't have any sound - only small clicks sounding from the speakers when trying to get sound.

- Headphones and HDMI sound works fine
- The green volume bar shows sound - like the computer/soundcard believes it's playing sound
- Nothing is on mute
- The laptop speakers are set to standard playback device
- The driver claims the device is working correctly, no errors can be found.

What I've tried:
1. Latest driver updates - wierdly enough the clicks dissappear and it's completely silence.
2. Reboots, recoveries, ubuntu-bootdisc, switch back and forth with HDMI source,
3. Complete factory-recovery reset. Still no sound - clicks before the driver update - then no sound at all.

Is there something that I should try, or is it a hardware problem and the only option is to return the computer?

Thanks a lot for your help and input,
Filip

Insert and remove the headphone jack several times. Also there is a sound setting to enable speaker and headphone output simultaneously, try that.

Welcome to the forums!

Still no sound with a Ubuntu live cd? Then either there's something lodged in the headphone jack making the system believe headphones are connected, or something is wrong hardware-wise.

Harryc's suggestion above will narrow it down. Good luck and let us know.

I do feel very welcome, what wonderful and quick response -

Very nice suggestions indeed, unfortunately it didn't work:

It recognizes when the headphones are plugged in, and when they are out. Also the setting for both to play at the same time did not change anything.

Any other suggestion? Until then, I will try with a new ubuntu cd since the other is kind of old, but I'm not sure if it can use the audio without drivers, and I'm not sure that I can install drivers when using the boot-cd.

Again, thanks a lot for devoting your time to help me.
Hugs,
Filip

Right, multistream was the setting I was thinking of. I can't think of anything else you haven't tried, so my opinion is that you should call Lenovo and send it in for service.

Edit: One more thing to try - boot a PC-Doctor CD and run the audio tests.

Sadly the same scenario happens when doing the audio test: some clicks when trying to produce sound. Then the diagnostic screen say the test passed.

I guess I'll call them tomorrow and get ready to give away my beauty..

Thanks again for the help, much appreciated (!)
