Problems calibrating the Touchpad on a brand-new Edge 15

Hello everyone,

I'm new to this forum, I live in France, and I'm new to the Thinkpad (at least Lenovo's...), so please, bear with me: I've just received my new Edge 15 (was yesterday), with a 2GHz Pentium, 2Gb of RAM and a 500Gb Seagate HD spinning at the incredible and dizzying speed of 5,400 revolutions per minute. The machine came with no OS installed, at the moderate price of 279 euros (about 300 USD, I guess).

This said, as soon as the Thinkpad was out of its box, I proceeded to install a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Professional Edition I got from Microsoft as a gift for being a good beta tester and accredited developer over the past 5 years. I've got a legitimate product key and everything. Install went fine, so did Microsoft Updates and the like. The Thinkpad works fine, barring one big issue: the Touchpad. My other computers, both laptops, are a 2006 MacBook Pro and a 2006 Toshiba Satellite. The former runs Snow Leopard, the latter Windows XP Pro. In both cases, the trackpad is easy to calibrate and fine-tune. I've never encountered any problem scrolling up and down pages, even with the Toshiba and its minuscule trackpad.

On the Thinkpad, although the Touchpad is well-sized, I can't seem to calibrate it correctly: for example, I can't start scrolling down from the upper right corner; I have to place my index finger almost midway down the right edge to see the little animation on screen, and then the page starts scrolling down. Scrolling up isn't a problem. I've updated the driver (the version installed was released in May, 2011, so I doubt there's a more recent one, and trying to update it from Hardware Manager only brings a "already up-to-date driver" message).

So, do some of you guys know a special trick to calibrate the Touchpad? I've tried it over and over with the mouse properties, both from Control Panel and from the icon in the Tray, and I can't find a way to make scroll down start from the upper right corner of the Touchpad. I've uninstalled the device, rebooted, and the driver reinstalled, but no change. I don't mind fiddling with .sys and .ini files in the Synaptics folder if I have to, but I'm pretty sure there's an easier way to solve my problem...

Edit: perhaps I hadn't fiddled enough... I've just managed to make scroll start from the upper right corner by disabling filtering in both the scrolling area and the edges of the Touchpad. Scrolling doesn't feel as natural as on my MacBook Pro, though, but this Edge thingy doesn't cost quite as much, either...

Thanks for your time! "I'll be back", I'm sure... :-)

Bienvenue au forum, FrenchToast! :D
My French isn't great so I'll stick to English for now. :P

I assume you have the UltraNav driver?

Go to the touchpad settings after pressing Fn+F8. Expand the Smart Check Settings tree, and disable the three filtering options. This should help.

Also, consider TwoFingerScroll from Google Code; it's better than the standard Synaptics two-finger scrolling in the UltraNav code.

By the way, use this tool here to download/update all of the drivers and tools automatically:
