Per your feedback, we're making some changes to the style, as well as developing a new (additional) theme called "Thinkpad Legacy" that you'll be able to choose from.

Changes to both include:
  • a tad more space below the header so it looks less crowded up there
  • the twitter and paypal donation button height reduced
  • set max-width on post profile area for larger screen resolutions
The new "Thinkpad Legacy" style:
  • almost identical to the original subsilver style, tables and all
  • profiles, of course, on the left
  • I'm making the header images resizable and writing media queries so that it's as responsive as possible, but it probably won't meet web standards
  • This will not be the default style, for reasons including the previous bullet point. You will be able to select it from your profile and use it.
I've been working on it since this morning. I'll update you when it's ready.

I agree. New forum looks nicer, but the avatar should be put back to the left side, not the right.

We all got used to user info block on the left, and now it's on the right. It's like taking physical trackpoint buttons and turning them into clickpad. That is the only major change I noticed so far.

I have completed these changes. To activate the Legacy theme, navigate to:

user control panel→board preferences→edit global settings→My board style→ and selecting "Thinkpads Legacy"

Give the new style a go. There are still some things to add, perhaps direct links to the active posts etc. so you don't have to use the quick links button, but I've ran out of time and will have to wait to get to anything more :/

old farts rejoicing.. :)
but i think i'll try the new style until i get used to it..

just in the FWIW file, wife's car suffered parking lot damage a few weeks ago, hartford insurance was great and fast, auto body shop did a fine job and LOANED us a courtesy car.. WHICH car was so complex it took ME 10 minutes to find the gear shift lever and actually shift the thing..
and i never DID figure out how to tune the radio.. :)

i think, for me and cars, an oldie is a goodie.. maybe the same for forum GUI but time will tell..

Don't know if this is new, but the board index now lists:

"W500/510/520 and W700/710 series specific matters only"

as the description for one of the board areas. Is this new,
or have I been missing this for some time? In any case,
now I want to hunt down a "W710."

Fantastic!

Had the author's info been on the left instead of the right I'd say I'm there. I'll stick to the new forum for now and see if it sticks. Thanks for reducing the width of the author's area. Looks much better great now. Thank you for all your hard work. Great job.

Thanks for not adding a "like" or "reputation" popularity contest button for insecure attention seeking Facebookers.

Ok, I switched to the legacy theme which works much better on my preferred browser and preferred Thinkpad. I never use a phone or tablet for web browsing so mobile compatibility is not a problem. I use my UXGA T60P for the forum and the tabled theme displays much better. Thanks for giving us the option. And for putting the forum in https as well.

Nice to have options these days ! I would actually prefer the new style if the author's box width would get fixed.

One thing that seems to have gotten lost - or at least I'm missing it - are the links to "new posts"/"unread posts"/"your posts" that were located in the upper RH quadrant of the original old layout. Is there any way that we can get these back?

Click on Quick links at the top/left and a whole new list of options opens up, incl. Unread posts.

Many thanks for the option for enabling that legacy theme! :)
I just cant accept the new one. A bit of re-desing is sure wont hurt, but the complete change is too much, IMHO.
Always should take some extra steps when doing such deep work.
And again thanks a lot for this! Much appreciated. :bow: :thumbs-UP:

Site looks much improved in links2!

I'm using the 'Thinkpad legacy' board style.
Line 256 of ./styles/morrow-legacy/theme/stylesheet.css causes an empty whitespace between posts. This is a minor detail but acts to disrupt the eye as is moves between posts.

I suggest striking this line:
td {
padding: 2px;
}

likewise, the inline definition for
#header_container could be margin: 0 25px 0 25px;

currently it's margin: 0 25px 10px 25px;

edit: hats off on the upgrade. Upgrading sites, and their underlying systems, is full of complications.

The whitespace between posts is standard in phpBB styles, but I definitely understand where you're coming from. I don't intend to change it.

I spit the difference with you and set the bottom margin for that div to 5px, I agree it looks better with less space. Thanks!

Indeed, I'm coming from forum.thinkpads.com. There whitespace between posts is not standard.

I am tweaking the custom css of my browser to align the look of the old forum with 'Thinkpad legacy' (mockup http://jesseo.com/kites/mockup-forum-thinkpads.jpg ) using these code snapshots from Oct 2016:
css http://termbin.com/yw6n ; html http://termbin.com/niy5
image reference http://jesseo.com/kites/forum-thinkpads-oct-2016.png

Old site's "header" included 7 text links and 6 icons; current legacy site includes 16 text links and 12 icons. Could you add ID's to the main header elements so we can (more easily) customize the look? For example by adding IDs to these tags/blocks:

Code: Select all

<img alt="Charlie Chaplin, his bird, and Thinkpad laptop"
src="./styles/morrow-legacy/theme/images/custom/charlie_bird_laptop.gif">

<img title="Follow ThinkPads.com on Twitter"
alt="Thinkpads Forum Twitter Button" src="./styles/morrow-legacy/theme/images/custom/follow_thinkpads_twitter_legacy.png">

<p style="font-style:italic; margin-top:25px; font-size:12px;">
							Goodbye Lorita, wherever you've gone... </p>

The other kicker with the upgraded site is external javascripts. Any chance these jquery could (again) be local? Could the cloudflare reference also be made local?

Code: Select all

<script type="text/javascript" src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.0/jquery.min.js"></script>
<script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/flexibility/2.0.1/flexibility.js"></script>
if anyone wants it, here's a working minimalist css, tested in firefox with file saved as
[profile directory]/chrome/userContent.css

@-moz-document domain(forum.thinkpads.com) {

.hasjs td {padding:0 !important}
#user_side img, .quicktools img, #header_div_middle p img {display:none}
#header_div_left img {display:none}
#user_side strong {font-weight:normal}
#header_div_middle img {display:none}
#header-subsilver, .genmed div {display:none}
/* .nav {display:none}
*/
.genmed img {display:none}
#header_container {margin:0;margin-top:5px}
#header_div_middle {padding:0;margin-top:5px}
#wrapheader {margin-top:0.5em; margin-bottom:0.5em}
th, th a {color:#FFA34F !important;}
}

edit: changed comma to semi-colin here
padding:0,margin-top:5px

For those who use Pale Moon as their browser, [in W7] go to:
C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData\Roaming\Moonchild Productions\Pale Moon\Profiles\[whatever].default
and create a new directory: chrome in which you copy the above userContent.css [from @-moz all the way to }]
You'll need to restart the browser to see the result.
And restart it every time you change that .css

Yeah that's what I had to do. I should work on a change to handle this kind of URL change.

Any chance we'd be able to get "Go Down" and "Go Up" links at the top and bottom of threads, that act as "End" and "Home" when clicked? I've found it incredibly useful for traditional forums on touch displays and mobile, as well as on my desktop when I don't want to physically type "End" or "Home". See geekhack.org as an example of what I'm referring to. For example, next to the page numbers here:

Love the TP Forums classic colors/ font/ sizes etc.

Wish I could apply it to every FORUM on the web :)
