X1 Carbon vs new Win 8 boxes

I'm excited about the new Yoga and Twist. Confused w all the information out on them though.
I was sold on X1 until I saw these come out.
Was on line just now w Lenovo and their Chat site... Rep basically recommended X1 Carbon over their new Twist and Yoga.. Said it beats both in just about any way.
Any one have thoughts on this dilemma??
I'd like a Win8 experience... Don't want to buy "day old bread" so to speak.

The 13" Yoga looks like one of the trial products for Windows 8 emphasising touch.

The X1C is more of Intel's "Ultrabook" design (read: Macbook Air).

The Twist is a dumbed down X-series Tablet if you ask me.

I've got the Windows 8 RTM running on an X1 Carbon and its fantastic. No touch screen, of course, but its very fast and responsive.

Was talking about Win 8, Win 7 to a friend of mine. Computer guy.. knows his stuff.
He really looks at this stuff with a chuckle. Says that we buy the latest and greatest when most of our needs are so simple, XP would probably suffice.
He thinks Win 8 will tilt the learning curve to the point of frustration for most people. I don't know. I use Win 7 and really like it. I use OSX too for stuff, but I have to admit, I love the speed and simplicity of Win 7. My computers are all over 6 years old and I would love to have a new one. I have to admit I get paralysis of analysis as Gary Player used to say, when it comes to computer hardware. I decide then read some computer site that tells me there will be better coming out.... <g>. I love all this new stuff.
I have to ask Art (seriously)( I love Seinfeld), if Win 8 is worth it?? I'd like to play w it just to play w it. I do like simplicity to get done what needs to get done, but I do like to have a "toy" to fool with. I love the challenge of learning new stuff. Art, do you use Win 8 for daily work/play or just for recreational computing as I like to call it<g>.

That's a pretty silly statement for someone who you say who knows his stuff, and seems to be a very one-dimesional view of what an OS actually does for a user.

I beta tested OS X 10.8 last winter. There wasn't much exciting in it for me. All I saw were some gimmicks to help sell iPhones. On a lark, I downloaded one the Windows 8 consumer preview and I was really intrigued. I think the new interface is great. I have the RTM now, and I find Windows 8 to be very polished and stable. There is no denying that there is a learning curve. Its not like Windows 7. But I think change is a good thing, and I enjoy using it. You may experience it differently, but for less than $40, give it a shot. You can always go back to Windows 7 if it isn't your cup of tea.

Oh, I an use Windows 8 mostly for personal computing, but I wouldn't have any problem using it for my business. When we upgrade workstations, I will buy Windows 8 for myself and my staff.

Good to hear you like the X1 Carbon and Win 8.
I've read that you can't use Win 8 w a mouse, but obviously your experience has been different.
X1 Carbon looks like such a neat unit too.
Did you get it directly through Lenovo (almost wrote IBM <g>) or another source??
New Microsoft store opened up here recently in Orlando. I may have to truck over to see it and see if they have the X1 Carbon...

I had a Twist on pre-order until I saw it today in Staples. It's the Thinkpad design done in very cheap plastic. Functionally it's OK, though the keyboard is very "clackly". Anyway I cancelled my order.

The Yoga I haven't seen, but I've got one coming this week, so we'll see. It's kind of an odd duck because it's swivel screen would appeal mostly to business users doing small presentations. But it's built in the Ideapad consumer line. So expect classier plastic than the Twist with metal details.

The fact is that the X1C is in a class by itself. It is the equivalent of a MacBook Pro. (And priced accordingly.) It was designed with Windows 8 in mind - with it's big multi-touch trackpad. It has probably the best trackpad of any non-Apple computer. You will be able to do all of the Windows touch gestures there.

So I think the bread here is still quite fresh. (It's just been out for a couple of months.)

It's the rest of the ThinkPad lineup that is going to be ageing, like the X230. It still represents most bang for the buck, but it's tiny trackpad isn't going to get you very far in Win 8. But you can always add a new Logitech or Microsoft wireless multi-touch trackpad to carry along.

Got my X1C a little over a month ago. Imaged the drive and threw on Win 8 RTM first thing. Two impressions:

Hardware: The platform is epic; I love the feel, the location of the keys, the size, weight, the touchpad...

Software: Win 8 is a mostly positive experience for me. Without a touch screen some of the features make less sense and the Metro interface is harder to navigate. The multi-touch pad mitigates most of those issues, though.

It is EXTREMELY fast and responsive given the hardware.

From a business standpoint there are a few unrealised features, such as profile synch and skydrive for corporate use, but that's a server-side issue, not Win 8. I think SharePoint 2013 will alleviate some of the missing features. The consumer versions of these are very nice.

Also, the tiles feature of Metro would be great if they had corporate versions (such as Outlook calendar, Inbox, etc.) but they aren't available for Office 2010. Again, this will probably be solved with 2013, and office 365 I belive has apps for this, but I have not tried it yet. Gadgets are no longer available, so you can't use those in the interim.

Office 2013 has reached RTM and, IIRC, except for OneNote, all apps are still traditional desktop style. They do come in Metro styling though.

You're right, but I won't get my hands on 2013 for a few more weeks. I'm not necessarily looking for actual metro apps, but the tiles feature is useless to me unless I can embed corporate data into it - I'm hoping (planning!) on 2013 having at least some of this functionality.

It's also been available in preview form for some months... But if you mean if Office 2013 utilizes the Tiles anyhow, the answer, as of today, is no.
